Through this images, I would like to address the general, simple and clear summary of my research. It is telling about a wish on the order of : 1) re-planting and well-managing forest, 2) providing reliable wood materials, and 3) sustaining the culture of wooden construction. The order is supposed to be not in the other way around. When the third image become the first in the order to lift the culture, it resulting into hard and resistance path from people, resource materials, skills, and..miserable funding or aid which I have witnessed, not function in the long run. I am here talking about my home country Indonesia.
- Where can we find or how even to create a well-managed sustainable forest as the first wish become true? It is the forest where the trees are in biodiversity environment, not in a monoculture or fast growing, nor in an intensified management setting. Thus means the forest consist of combination of different types and ages of tree species, which enable some of dead tree decompose by it self to enrich the forest bed nutrition which supports the grows for young and adult trees. During this cycle, trees grows rehabilitating the land and bring back the reserves clean water. This well-managed forest resulted from and bring well-being for community within or surround and supports wider relationship among civilisation, grass roots, government, and private. Means that environment protection and social justice are union. And apparently re-planting well managed forest, starting as soon as possible, is a long term disaster mitigation and prevention in every way. The most question is how can we able to contribute to plant the trees in such forest as most of population like us live in the city, way far from the forest, never plant trees before, or do not know how to get and care the trees?
- Tress (specially Indonesian tropical hardwood), which be felled from a well-managed forest regulated simultaneously within proper cycle instead of being exploited, are able to reach their mature age (not too young and not too old) which resulting optimal diameter, long, and proper density depend on the tree species and purpose. Thus enable the tree to grow and develops their own natural durability against weathering, thermite, fungus, insects, etc, along with their strength and hardness. Because of certain family genetics, hormones, and age, some hard woods do have self-defend. Their inner microstructure supported by thylosis and microfibril as well containing natural chemical such as silica, damar, oil, or other deposits that makes them reliable for construction even in wet environment. Reliable also means that the trees are divers enough for different purposes of structural and non structural. Woods with high density reserved for structural function such as stilt posts and beams, as well as the key for earthquake adaptations or unstable ground because of permeable soil with high plasticity. Woods with middle to low densities can serves for wall, door, roof, etc. Thus, wide range of density woods can grow together with many types of palm and bamboo.
- Because the wood stock materials are provided, building new or repairing with woods become realistic. More carpenters and skilled craft people from training and apprenticeship would appear as soon as their works more asked. So people able to build proper design for long term. And as natural phenomenon happened in between such as earthquake and floods, they would already more prepared weather in traditional or modern way of life.
