Dipterocarps Trees Family
Dipterocarps
a huge divers trees family which storages more CO2 and left behind
in the Indonesian wood traditions and forestry history
In my dissertation, I found 10 hardwood names from their uses in traditional constructions that are from the same family Dipterocarps. Their wood and botanic names are written in the illustration. And those written with white colour are the names in local language (Nama kayu di daerah). Dipterocarps trees have high diversities in their family and are high CO2 absorber. Thus, their wood densities, hardness and durability are high. The similarities that I found is that their inner microstructure are all supported by tylosis and contains white damar and chemical deposits. Thus, they are difficult to be preserved, which is unnecessary.
They are native of tropical rain forest of Sumatera, Borneo and Sulawesi. Unfortunately the trees were not found in Java except Keruing wood, since Java island experiences deforestation since very very long (more than 400 hundred years ago).
Giam and Blangiran are able to grow in watershed /wet land (jenuh air), in 100-400 above sea level as well as Rasak, Kapur and Bengkirai. Meranti Kuning and Balau can grow on 600-850 above sea level. Keruing, Merawan, Meranti Merah/Tembaga can grow on 1000-1300 above sea level as presented in the illustration. They grows on different kind of soil such as podzolic, yellow, dry, rocky or marshland.
